Even early 19th century meetings sucked: “How many useless words are spoken in this kind of a meeting cannot be imagined by a person who has not attended one,” he later wrote. “There are the earnest and the impetuous, who want to speak to satisfy their temperaments and soothe themselves by declaiming at random. There are the boobs, who want to tell what they have seen or heard, believing it very important because it is all they know. There are the vain, who, preoccupied with themselves, insist upon explaining their conduct.” Sound familiar? That’s what Rémusat wrote about a 1830 political meeting.
